Blocks of the month for 2015 Thursday, January 1, 2015

BlockS of the MonthS for 2015

Hampton Ridge is drawing to a close and I know there are a few quilts finished already. This was a learning curve for me, and i was really glad to have Tracy faithfully sending the blocks out every two months & keeping a track of everything here so well. Sara did a fantastic job of guiding those who came to the sit and sews on BOM Saturdays mornings.

We are excited with our new BOM's - North by Northwest which is just getting off to a good start. We do have places available for this quilt and we have a couple of kits cut with a white background rather than the shimmer pale grey - and this will give the quilt a really fresh Modern look. All the applique pieces in this quilt are ready to sew, they are precut and fusibled (?) i don't know how to express that... - anyway they have fusible on them already.

Mill Works is hanging in the shop and looks really lovely. The border in particular is just spectacular - everyone comments how nice it is. We are anticipating the first mail out of that to be in February. Mill Works is an 8 month program, $60 per month, plus postage. The image here doesnt do it justice at all. Beautiful colouring with lavender, burgundy and blues. it has loads of visual appeal. It is a quilt inspired by The American Textile History Museum, and was designed by Nancy Rink. Worth Googling. Funny word but we all get THAT don't we :)

Kaffe Fasset has a BOM starting next year. I hope its good....we ordered the kits and haven't even seen the quilt. Can he have a dud? Lets hope not :) I am taking names for anyone interested in this (mystery) BOM. The information I have indicates a February/March start. The patterns will be printed in Homespun Magazine.

Rachelle Denneny is also producing a block of the month, exclusively for Widebacks. This will be good - we know that. Phone us if you'd like to be part of this and we'll get your details into our database. ( we anticipate to start in February)

ANY Block of the Months you may have lurking in the deep recesses of your sewing cupboards can now be brought out and dusted off and finished. Get rid of the guilt in 2015. Make a commitment and come along to the shop with other resolute souls on the LAST SATURDAY of each month. Sara Miller will be in the shop from 930 -12.00 (note amended time) to help/encourage/push/coerce/bribe you to finish those projects that you just never seem to get to. We don't care if they're inherited from your grandmother, lets get some stuff finished! Sara is a very experienced quilter with a wealth of knowledge about how to get blocks done efficiently in the easiest manner. if there is a short cut way, she can show you. I know lots of people have unfinished BOM's - this is a great opportunity to finish them off - (make room for new UFO's.) $20 per session.

This session is also suitable for new patchworkers or quilters that would like some instruction or guidance with general patterns.  We can also get you started!

Okay, i need to admit i made another mistake on the previous newsletter about Rachelle's applique class. Yes it is on Friday 5th, not Thursday 4th. December.

Her project is a bright modern appliqued cushion. It looks very appealing - Rachelle has used fabrics from the Fancy by Lily Ashbury (moda), and it is cheery and very appealing. Her applique method is tidy and invisible. We have a few seats if you're free next Friday. Let us know asap if your're interested. $70 class fee. BYO lunch.

That's it for tonight.

SALE dec 26th 2014 - Jan 23rd 2015 Thursday, January 1, 2015

BEST WISHES for the holiday season to everyone in both hemispheres! Hot here Downunder & snow in the Northern hemisphere. And as we are contrary people :), lots of us are wishing we were on the opposite side of the world enjoying the Sun or Snow. Never mind. This might take your mind off that thought for a few minutes.

We're having a month long sale. From now till 23rd of January. We will be closed until then in the shop so will process orders and payments from the 27th January when we are back on deck. This means payments wont be actioned until we do the orders, late January.

*If you would like to collect rather than have it posted, send us an email and we'll hold it for you.

Multiple orders will be collated, so don't worry if you shop a few times - we'll pick that up and make sure your orders all go together in the most economical postage we can do with express post.

All of our wide fabrics are discounted by at least 20%, - some are 30%, some are 35%. The fabric shown just below here is 'Whisper', and is available in 5 different colours. Normal price is great at $32 per metre, but now is reduced by 30% which makes it an astounding $22.40. I think that this would make a fabulous whole cloth quilt - 2.5 metres of coloured on one side, and 2.7 for the reverse in the White on White version or the White on Ivory would make a really stunning quilt. Ask your longarm quilter to do something simple (baroque hearts) just to hold it together and you'll have a functional great quilt for a great price. Fabric would be $116.48.

Another brilliant bargain fabric is Spot on Small - this has been reduced by $35%. Normally this is $34 pm, but with the discount is $22.10 pm..Ther is a search engine under the shopping cart - just enter Spot  and evertything that has spot in its name will Our 44" wide is reduced too - and i will be endeavouring to get more of the ranges up on the website over january..

.Precuts are all reduced by 20% too. We will take the cardboard out of layer cakes to make more economic posting, but its better value to buy some meterage as well. lol!! Also we have more that shows up on the website i didn't have the numbers all correct and its too late to change them now. Also we have more that arent listed, again if you are after something that is not listed, email me. Just too little time.....:(Precuts are all reduced by 20% too. Patterns have been reduced by 10%. this includes all the Quick Curve Ruler patterns, the Jaybird (hex n more ruler) patterns and ll the Little Louise patterns as well, plus all the others.

We don't answer the messages from the answering machine as it doesn't operate properly.

So please don't leave messages - we just wont get them.

Emails we do get! happy to answer and questions - i will be away with some family & friends for a few weeks and reception may be a bit of a problem, but i am not ignoring any emails, i will get to them when i have accessibility.

Hope you find something that you like, and enjoy your browsing with Widebacks. Tracy & i are doing the family thing for the next few weeks but will be happy to pack your orders as quickly as we can in January.

Best wishes

Just for your information Thursday, January 1, 2015

Our sale this year has had a few hiccups - just admin problems, not problems with the fabric.  Anicipating that  this will be all rectified next week from jan 5th  when the programmers are back on deck.  In the meantime - if you are having problems don't give up!  All fabrics are at least 20% off.  Some are 30% & some are even 35% .  Our 112cm/44" wide stuff is 20% off & all patterns are 10% off as well.  Precuts are 20% off too.

If your order doesn't calculate the discount we will do it.  Unfortunately one ofthe prblems is that ONLY the discounted price is showing -the orignal price has disappeared from the screen, so its hard for you to see what you are saving - this should be fixed next week

If you would like to collect your order rather than paying postage, we are happy to accomodate this option.

PUT YOUR ORDER THROUGH AS PER NORMAL & than send us an email telling us you'd like to collect.  We will not be processing orders (or $$)  until the last week of January.  We will email you when your order is ready to collect.

As mentioned in our newsletter, there is a lot more product to be put on the website, so check back occasionally.  We will collate all orders so you wont pay more postage than necessary.

I fell in love with this Civil War quilt when I saw it in Sydney at a Trade Show in June. I just couldn't stop looking at it and looking INTO it. I found it really compelling so i thought i'd take the plunge and do the whole Block of the Month thing. A new direction for me, but the response so far has been excellent. Cost is $40 per month and we expect be starting the first posting in November. It will run over 12 month. (for locals we will be offering this in the Studio with Sara Miller, last Saturday of the Month, 9.30 - 1.30. Sara is very knowledgeable about Civil War plus she is a very experienced Tutor. (if there is a better way to do a block, Sara will teach it)

i cannot get the image loaded, so to view the quilt, do a search in the website for Hampton Ridge. Sorry about that - its worth a look!

Anyway, that has partly brought you up to date. We even some really great jigsaws which are fantastic 'quilts'. They are brain teasers (ie educational) & produced in Australia by an Australian company. I haven't got them loaded on the website yet, but they would make a great coffee table pieces or excellent gifts for quilters. Stay watching....

I'm STILL having trouble with Telstra...i can hardly believe it! The mobile is still the best way to get me at the moment. I'm past annoyed but trying to stay cool. I apologise for any issues this has caused. I still live in hope they can transfer my home line to the shop (1.5 kilometres)...eventually.....

Cheers for now,

CLASSES STARTING: FRIDAY 3rd May. Saturday, April 27, 2013

We have been asked by many people if we are going to run classes, sit & sews, etc etc.   The good new is yes!

We are going to do something a little bit different.  On the First Friday of each month we will be having a Quilt of the Month.  This will be a one day class, using a different pre-cut each month.  You can sign up for one class, or a couple or all.  Classes will be limited to 10 participants.

Rachelle Denneny will be teaching these classes.  Rachelle recently won the BEST OF AUSTRALIA, at AQC in Melbourne April 2013, with her amazing quilt Golden Ivory. Rachelle is also an experienced tutor, and she will gently coach you and impart knowledge to enhance your own quilting journey.

The Class fee is $50  which  will include the particular pattern that Rachelle is designing for each month.  This is a new direction for Rachelle, and her designs are very much in-sync with how Widebacks 'thinks'.  Generally we do 4 ingredient quilts:  Precut, Solid Colour,  Pattern & Backing.  Our quilts are beautiful to look at, quick to make, inexpensive - they won't break the bank, and achievable to make even by brand new quilters.  These are quilts that YOU WILL complete easily.  You can see the first quilt sample in the studio at Davey's Road, Flagstaff Hill OR go to the Gallery here, and look in the QUILT OF THE MONTH album.  The first class is using a layer cake, and we still have a couple of these put aside for the last few participants if they choose to use this range.  We also have a number of border options from Cuzco.

Morning & Afternoon tea will be provided also.   BYO lunch.

A class requirement list is available on receipt of $50.

We Did It. Saturday, April 27, 2013

Remember last Saturday nights newsletter....(very daggy shop with the family all working hard painting & scrubbing etc)? Well we've had a week we'd sooner not repeat in a hurry - working around the clock till ridiculous hours (after a days work for the boys) and we did it.
We had our first day of trading on Saturday, and we had a fantastic response. We were all just so pleased at everybody's positive reactions, and the really great 'vibe' that was happening all day.

Of course this wouldn't have happened without such generous friends and family. I would like to acknowledge my friends Peggy, Donna, & Pam for their help on Friday doing the precuts. 5 huge cartons of new stock arrived from Moda, and they sorted, priced and displayed all of this as well as all the precuts we shifted over from home. A big job & they probably will ache for a week. Thanks so much ladies!

I also want say thank you to everyone who sent such kind emails of support through the week, as well as the phone calls. It means such a lot to me, that you'd take the time to write/ring, so thank you very much.

I've got some good specials coming up, but am behind with admin so cannot give the details today. The next newsletter will be all about fabric & include the 6th birthday specials & new stock images.

This is just a few photos of the crazybusy week, and here we are a few hour later on Saturday.

Wednesday? New flatpack we have 14 of them. Still not enough!

The 'Vision' : A huge painted quilt on this wall. Suggestions??

Ray decided on the layout. It is brilliant. We have a gallery too now.

Thursday. Insurance covernote: tick! Now can start bringing fabric in.

Kristen. Thursday dinner. Hmmm chicken, chips & salad this time.

Friday. Starting to get racking sorted. Just need to add fabric now.

Thursday. Donna pricing at the table.

Friday. Donna pricing UNDER the table.

We still have a lot to do, but we have made an amazing transformation in less than a week and a half from getting the key till opening the doors to the public. Ray, Ben, Danae, Pete & Kristen all made this happen. Rent a Crew. They come with 5 kids under 8 if you're interested. :)

If you are interested in visiting & you are interstate - come for the day!: Find a cheap flight (check dates with me first please!) and we'll pick you up & drop you back at the airport. We are only 20 minutes from the airport so its easy.

If you're local you're very welcome to visit. As i haven't worked out a routine/hours yet & am still moving office stuff there, please phone to ensure i am actually there, at least for the next few weeks till i get sorted. Thanks for being understanding.

The address is:

WE'VE TAKEN A LEASE ON A SHOP! Saturday, April 27, 2013

Mid March Excitement!

Well i just wanted to tell you about our news! We've taken a lease on a shop premises - and for the past few days we've all been working to start to prepare it for moving Widebacks to its new home. (and out of mine) It has happened very quickly, (we only got the key on Thursday lunchtime - but amazingly so far we've made huge progress. The carpet has been cleaned and the walls are now painted. Watch this progress over the next 6 days. We are having a group visit NEXT Saturday, so its going to be a crazy ride this week.

My amazing family has come to the rescue again, and have all helped enormously. Ben & Kristen are the parents of Liam & Chelsea, & Peter & Danae have Baxter, Fleur & Oliver. We are a very close family, and the kids are very loving to each other. They fall into 2 natural groups wehich we've named Team A & Team B. Liam & Fleur (A) & Baxter & Chelsea (B). We all just share Oliver who is a delightfully happy placid baby.

I know you'll forgive my indulgence with this newsletter. I am quite excited and just wanted to share the news with you all. Hadn't expected to be moving for our 6th Birthday. I have got some Special Birthday Offers planned for that too, but will do this move first, then post details of that.

Any suggestions for the new workroom welcomed.

Cheers, Brenda

Group Visit March 9th. Saturday, March 9, 2013

Despite the really hot weather we've been having here in Adelaide, and my house being well insulated because of so much FABRIC...we had a really nice day today with 4 lovely ladies who visited us while they are in Adelaide for a Quilt Retreat over the long weekend.   Danae came in and helped too, always great to have another pair of hands!   Now i am feeling inspired to make some new quilts up & also some new table runners from charm packs.  It would just be nice if it was a bit cooler.

March 2013 Newsletter Friday, March 8, 2013

How many times have you heard or said that in the past week! Amazingly 2 months have passed this year and I'm STILL trying to remember to write 2013 rather than 2012.

The fabric still keeps on coming! And it just keeps getting more exciting - the colours are fabulous, and the prints are wonderfully versatile.

Late last week we had more Tonga Batiks arrive. As well as the five new 2.7m wide bolts pictured below, we have 3 colours that are normal width (112cm - 44 inches) that arrived as well. These are Tonga Java Blenders, and as you can see them in the first 3 images. These colours are good with for the batik precuts that we have in stock. More colours will be added soon.

You will find them under Printed 112cm/44 Inches.

And also what WE'VE ordered...

There is a new cut of this coming also - 20 strips WOF x 6 inches. And i will keep you informed when it arrives. This is also a Tonga Batik. How pretty is this!

2 1/2 inch strips x 40.

Tonga 2.7m /106" wide TAFFY

In the last newsletter i introduced Swatch Buddies. I was so excited about telling you about how great they are, i actually didn't mention how or what they are used for. They are brilliant little cards that you can stick your fabric samples to, and when you are looking for 'a piece' you have your other fabrics from your project with you to help with further purchases. There is a brilliant website with a quick tutorial on how to put them together (as well as other uses for them) at

So have a quick look and you may be converted like i was!

Another post in a few days as more fabric came today!

Plus we are 6 years old this month. We will be offering a special in the next newsletter to mark the occasion.

Cheers for now,
